Karen speaks house! She is an Architect and a Realtor. She has a passion & a strong sensibility for envisioning amazing & super cool spaces – if not designing them or creating them, then finding them!
She values great neighborhoods with strong identities. She believes in the sustainability of urban density & the preservation of open space. She loves things with great design, from the very pragmatic to the highly artistic.
A Louisiana native, Karen moved to Denver in 2000 with an Architecture degree from LSU. (Geaux Tigers!) As a single mom with a new job in a new town, she bought her first house in the Berkeley neighborhood & for her house-warming party, invited friends to bring their tool belts & sledge hammers – let the Reno begin! She didn’t let her limited budget stop her from realizing her vision for the 1920s bungalow. She learned to sweat copper, run electrical, frame walls & float drywall. And in her spare time, she pulled out all the lawn on her double lot & sculpted a perennial xeriscape garden – still an oasis today!
Karen can be seen with her camera all over town, or toodling around on her Seafoam Green Vespa, cruising between this ice cream stand & that one (she’s never met a flavor she didn’t like!) Honk when you see her – she’ll honk back & wave with a friendly smile!
Where do you LIVE?
I live in Englewood, in the Harvard Gulch area. A few years ago, I bought a 1909 shotgun style house that needed much love – which I am giving it! To date, it’s gotten a complete exterior facelift – taken all the way down to framing & back again. With only drywall separating me from the elements, I actually lived here during the whirlwind construction! Ask me anytime for the before & afters! I love to share! I’m taking a breather before interior work begins – can’t wait to get out of this awkward & uncharming 75 year old kitchen!!
Why Real Estate... Aren't There Enough Agents On The Planet Already?
It seemed like a natural evolution for me. Tired of only sitting behind my cad software, I longed for more client interaction in an industry that I love! I am a fantastic solution finder & the process of buying or selling a home is certainly a… sometimes fun, sometimes not so fun… issue to be solved. I am fun, friendly & approachable, which makes this a great fit for me.
What Music Is Currently On Your Playlist?
Well, “if it’s got a good beat & you can dance to it” it will probably be found on my playlist! I’ll give a mention to some Louisiana faves – Lucinda Williams, Mark Broussard, Zachary Richard & of course The Neville Brothers. And some chicks with soul in their veins – Grace Potter, Nikki Bluhm, Brandi Carlile, Tracy Chapman. Then there’s Jeff Lynne & ELO, because he was such a visionary & it was a fun ride! And shout outs to Alabama Shakes, Cage the Elephant, & last but not least, a local fave, and friends of mine, The Lauren Michaels Band.
What Cause Gets Your Time And Money?
These days, it’s the Denver art scene, the Botanic Gardens & Historic Denver. While living in Steamboat Springs, I served on the Planning Commission. I am a supporter of Colorado Public Radio & Habitat for Humanity.
Give It Up. What Local Restaurant Is Your Best Kept Secret?
Since I can’t seem to shake diners out of my life (because I love them so much!), I’m gonna go with The Breakfast Queen on S. Broadway. I judge a breakfast joint by their biscuits & gravy & theirs is alllllmooooost as good as my Moms – which is saying a lot!!
